Fatal accident in Pune, India, after waste mountain collapse at incineration plant

A severe tragedy has struck a waste processing plant in the western Indian state of Pune, where at least nine workers lost their lives. The cause of the disaster was the collapse of a massive mountain of waste, triggered by the heavy rainfall that has affected the area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday of last week at the premises of the company Antony Waste Handling Cell. A colossal amount of waste, intended for electricity generation through incineration, suddenly collapsed onto one of the plant’s buildings, trapping a large number of employees.

According to preliminary data, a total of 23 people were trapped under tons of refuse. Despite the swift intervention of rescue teams, there was no hope left for nine of them; they were pulled from the debris without signs of life. Three other workers are still receiving medical treatment in the hospital, while the rest of those trapped were rescued during the difficult operation.

According to the company’s official statement, the cause of this catastrophe was the incessant downpours, which disrupted the stability of millions of tons of accumulated waste, also causing severe damage to the plant’s building structure.

Following this tragic event, all activity at the factory has been suspended until a further decision. Meanwhile, the competent authorities have launched a detailed investigation to clarify all the circumstances that led to this accident with fatal consequences.
