Extreme heat in Europe, emergency cases and death toll rise; an 18-month-old baby dies in Marseille

Italy and most of Western Europe are being gripped by a severe heatwave, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach as high as 40°C over the weekend.

Record temperatures have been recorded in France, Spain, Belgium and the United Kingdom, surpassing historic heat-stress levels in around 45% of European cities.

Preliminary data show that since the start of the week, hundreds of deaths linked to extreme heat have been recorded in several European countries, while the situation remains critical in many regions.

Health authorities say there has been a marked increase in emergency room visits in Europe’s main cities, with 10–15% more cases linked to high temperatures.

In Marseille, an 18-month-old baby died after being found trapped inside a hot car. Although immediate action was taken and the child was taken to the city’s University Hospital, doctors were unable to save the baby.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, while cases of heatstroke have heightened concerns about the danger facing children and vulnerable people.

Experts warn that this heatwave could continue in the coming days, increasing the risk to public health, especially for the elderly, children and pregnant women.

In some parts of France, local authorities have taken extraordinary measures, including temporary restrictions on certain activities and warnings for residents.

European institutions are urging citizens to avoid staying in the sun during peak hours and to take protective measures against extreme temperatures.
