Explosion in Manhattan near federal building, one man in handcuffs

In the early hours of Monday morning, an explosion shook the area around a federal complex in Manhattan, prompting police and firefighters to mobilize immediately.

The blast occurred right in front of 26 Federal Plaza, which houses a number of federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

CBS reports that the explosion is suspected to have been caused by fireworks thrown into a trash can. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control.

Videos posted on social media show employees and police running out of the building as a man is arrested and handcuffed. It has not yet been confirmed whether gunshots were heard or fired during the incident.

According to a New York Police Department alert, the area around the intersection of Worth and Lafayette streets is blocked. People are advised to avoid that area due to road closures, heavy traffic, and suspended public transportation lines.

Investigations are ongoing to clarify the full circumstances and the motive of the detained person.
