For 2026, British newspaper The Independent has compiled a list of 10 of Europe’s most impressive Christmas markets. It includes cities in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and other countries, where a blend of traditions, decorations and festive cheer offers visitors a distinctive experience.

1. Birmingham, Britain – November 5

Birmingham was the first to launch the Christmas market season, with its well-known Frankfurt Christmas Market welcoming visitors from November 5 until December 24.

In Victoria Square, the atmosphere evokes a little corner of Germany: it hosts the largest German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria. Bratwurst, schnitzel, mulled wine and other winter dishes are among the traditional treats on offer.

Another stop is Cathedral Square, where around 50 stalls offer handcrafted gifts and a variety of festive products.

2. Vienna, Austria – November 6

The magnificent Schönbrunn Palace becomes the starting point for celebrations in the Austrian capital on November 6. The market in front of it will welcome visitors until January 6, 2027.

More than a dozen markets will transform Vienna into a festive scene. Among the decorated wooden chalets, visitors can sample traditional Austrian dishes, while the historic Freyung market offers opportunities to shop for gifts.

The Christmas Village on Maria Theresa Square and Vienna Ice World, an ice rink that ranks among the most distinctive attractions, round out the experience.

3. Budapest, Hungary – November 13

Budapest also gets into the festive spirit early: the Hungarian capital’s markets open on November 13 and remain open until New Year’s Day.

Wooden chalets offering traditional products and festive food line Vörösmarty Square. Another major market takes place in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, where visitors can also enjoy an ice rink.

Traditional crafts and handmade gifts have a special place at these markets. Meanwhile, the scent of cinnamon from the famous chimney cakes fills the streets.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark – November 13

Copenhagen’s festive season also begins on November 13. The historic Tivoli Gardens become one of the season’s main attractions, with the market running until January 3, 2027.

Thousands of lights and stalls selling festive products transform the famous amusement park. Alongside the various activities, visitors can also go ice skating.

One highlight is the traditional St. Lucia parade, scheduled for December 13. Illuminated kayaks glide through the city’s canals, creating a distinctive spectacle.

5. Lille, France – November 18

In Lille, northern France, the Christmas market welcomes visitors from November 18, with celebrations ending on December 30.

Traditional wooden chalets fill Place Rihour. They sell toys, gifts and French treats, including tartiflette with melted cheese and chocolate waffles.

A giant Ferris wheel dominates the festive scene in the Grand-Place. Every Friday at 6 p.m., performers on illuminated stilts and festive shows join the music, bringing even more life to the market.

6. Bruges, Belgium – November 20

The Winter Glow event transforms the medieval city of Bruges into a winter fairy tale from November 20 until January 3, 2027.

In Markt and Simon Stevinplein squares, stalls offer handicrafts, traditional dishes and hot drinks. Around them, thousands of lights illuminate historic buildings.

The distinctive architecture and picturesque canals add to the atmosphere’s charm. Together, they make Bruges one of the most romantic places to experience Christmas in Europe.

7. Berlin, Germany – November 23

With the season beginning on November 23, Berlin offers Christmas market enthusiasts a vast range of choices: more than 80 markets are spread across the city’s neighborhoods.

Some will welcome visitors until the end of December. Among the best known is the market in Spandau, the historic district in the west of the German capital.

Gendarmenmarkt captures the spirit of a traditional German Christmas. At Alexanderplatz, meanwhile, the experience takes a different form, with a medieval market, a traditional carousel and other festive activities.

8. Basel, Switzerland – November 26

Basel’s Christmas market opens on November 26 and closes for the season on December 23.

Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz squares will host around 155 stalls. Their offerings include traditional gifts, Christmas tree decorations and Swiss dishes, including raclette with melted cheese and sausages.

Beyond the market, visitors can admire the city under its festive lights, particularly from the area around the cathedral and St. Martin’s Tower.

9. Strasbourg, France – November 27

Known as the “capital of Christmas,” Strasbourg launches the season for its famous market on November 27. Celebrations will continue until December 24.

The French city has one of the country’s oldest and largest Christmas markets. Place de Broglie hosts around 100 stalls, while numerous traditional Alsatian specialties can be found around the magnificent cathedral.

With its historic buildings, decorations and festive lights, Strasbourg remains one of the most sought-after destinations at this time of year.

10. Zagreb, Croatia – November 28

Zagreb rounds out the list of the 10 most impressive markets. In the Croatian capital, celebrations begin on November 28 and end on January 7, 2027.

Squares, parks, pedestrian streets and underground galleries will host at least a dozen markets, transforming the city into one large festive village.

Colorful decorations, activities and a wide variety of traditional products are expected to make Zagreb another appealing destination for tourists seeking to enjoy the magic of Christmas in Europe.
