Europe steps up rearmament efforts, DW: aiming for greater independence from the US

European countries are intensifying efforts to boost their defense capabilities and reduce their reliance on the United States, although American weapons currently remain the main pillar of rearmament on the continent.

During the NATO summit in Ankara, US companies secured major contracts, while at the same time the European bloc took steps to build up greater capabilities of its own.

As for missiles, part of the production is expected to be transferred to Europe. Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have reached an agreement to jointly produce ATACMS missiles in Germany, with the aim of increasing European stockpiles without affecting American industry.

Air defense remains one of the biggest challenges. The US Patriot system continues to be the backbone of defense for many NATO states and also plays a decisive role in Ukraine. However, Europe is working on its own alternatives, including the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG system for long-range defense and the German IRIS-T system for medium-range distances. The goal of these solutions is to build, in the coming years, a more independent European air shield.

According to DW, even in long-range strike capabilities, Europe continues to rely on American technology. Germany is planning to buy Tomahawk missiles from the United States, while also aiming to develop its own missiles and systems with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers.

The war in Ukraine has also highlighted the importance of drones. The European Union aims to establish a joint industry for drones and anti-drone systems. Ukraine is also involved in this initiative, alongside EU countries, bringing its direct experience from the large-scale use of unmanned aerial vehicles during the war.
