EU reaffirms support for Specialist Chambers, takes no position on PDK initiative

The European Union has once again confirmed its support for the Specialist Chambers, emphasizing that the institution is independent and that those convicted by it have the right to appeal.

The position was stated by spokesperson Kristijan Vigand when asked about the PDK’s initiative in Pristina to amend the law on the Specialist Chambers. He did not comment directly on the proposal, but focused on the court’s role, KosovaPress reports.

At a press conference at the EU headquarters in Brussels, Vigand said that the Kosovo Specialist Chambers are an independent judicial institution, established by a decision of the Assembly of Kosovo in 2014–2015, and that they operate within Kosovo’s legal system.

According to him, the work of this institution is important for ensuring justice and accountability for victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo.

Vigand also recalled that those convicted at first instance may appeal the judgment before independent appeals judges on a separate Specialist Chambers Appeals Panel.

He added that the European Union’s support for the court remains unchanged and will continue, emphasizing the principle of individual criminal responsibility.
