EU-Meta clash intensifies: Radical modifications demanded for Facebook and Instagram in face of heavy fine

The European Union has taken its conflict with tech giant Meta to another level. Authorities in Brussels are insisting that the company reconceive some of the core features of Facebook and Instagram, which a preliminary investigation considers as causing problematic behavior, particularly affecting young age groups.

According to the European Commission, Meta has violated the rules of the Digital Services Act. The main accusation is that both social networks are equipped with design elements that stimulate prolonged use and foster an unhealthy attachment to the screen. Investigators have targeted tools such as continuous scrolling to new content (infinite scroll), autoplay of videos, persistent notifications, and automated suggestion systems, which increase the likelihood of uncontrolled consumption, especially for children and teenagers.

On the other hand, Meta has dismissed these initial findings, emphasizing investments in protective tools for young people, parental supervision features, and options to set time limits. However, Brussels remains convinced that current instruments are insufficient and has demanded concrete interventions. These include modifying or removing mechanisms like endless browsing and autoplay of videos, as well as creating stronger barriers to disconnect users from the platform.

The company is given the right to present its arguments against these accusations. Nevertheless, if the Commission confirms the violations in the final decision, the tech giant faces a financial sanction of up to 6% of global annual turnover, a figure that easily exceeds 12 billion dollars.
