EU Convenes Interior Ministers After Ceuta Crisis

The European Union will hold an emergency meeting of interior ministers on Tuesday, August 4, following the arrival of more than 50,000 migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and the disagreements the situation has caused among member states. The decision to convene the meeting was taken unanimously during talks held on Saturday between representatives of the member states and experts from the European border agency, Frontex.

The aim of the meeting is to find a common approach to managing migration and strengthening the EU’s external borders. Twenty-two member states have signed a joint letter calling for coordinated action following the entry of tens of thousands of migrants into Ceuta from Morocco.

According to Spanish authorities, at least 67 people lost their lives while attempting to cross the border, while many others were injured. Meanwhile, Spain announced that migrant crossings had stopped following the installation of a 500-meter-long floating barrier along the border with Morocco.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded sharply to the criticism, accusing others of spreading disinformation and stressing that most of the migrants had already been returned to Morocco following intervention by the authorities. However, political disputes within the European Union continue. Italy and Denmark, backed by Poland and Sweden, criticized the way Spain handled the situation in Ceuta.

Ceuta has for years been one of the main entry points for migrants seeking to reach Europe. In 2021, around 8,000 people entered the enclave within a few days, triggering diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco. The meeting of interior ministers is expected to be crucial in determining how the European Union responds to the latest migration crisis and what measures will be taken to manage the bloc’s external borders.
