Epstein Case Returns to the Spotlight in Britain as Andy Burnham Considers Public Inquiry

British authorities are considering whether to launch a public inquiry into the activities carried out in the United Kingdom by Jeffrey Epstein, the financier convicted of sex crimes.

Victims Minister Alex Davies-Jones confirmed the possibility during an interview with BBC Newsnight.

She said Prime Minister Andy Burnham had agreed to meet Epstein’s “victims.” According to the minister, Burnham is considering what measures could be taken, as he now has access to all the information in his capacity as head of government.

Davies-Jones also announced that allegations against former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, who has been accused of sexual abuse by dozens of women, could be included in the same inquiry.

The minister had previously left the government, accusing its leaders of failing to take the voices of Epstein survivors into account. She now said Burnham had assured her that the matter would be taken seriously.

The BBC reported that before Burnham took office as prime minister, Labour Party activists had presented him with a document calling for a wide-ranging public inquiry into Epstein’s activities in Britain, the allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed, and claims of sexual violence involving West Ham co-owner David Sullivan. Sullivan has categorically denied the allegations.

The prospect of an inquiry was also welcomed by Anouska di Georgiou, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s survivors. However, she stressed that victims need concrete measures, not just commitments.

“We have heard promises before. What matters now is action, not headlines,” she told BBC Newsnight.
