A statement by former head of the American Chamber of Commerce Enio Jaço has brought renewed attention to some of the events that have dominated public debate in Albania.

Jaço mentions the arrest of former State Intelligence Service chief Vlora Hyseni, as well as corruption allegations against Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku.

According to him, developments are following one another so quickly that the public cannot fully analyze one event before being confronted with another.

The former head of the American Chamber of Commerce notes that issues of this kind, which would once have been enough on their own to shake a country, are now immediately overshadowed by the next news story.

In his statement, Jaço asks what the next development in Albania should be, as a number of cases and investigations examine links between organized crime and senior figures in power.

He also mentions the fact that citizens have been taking to the streets for four months, amid a climate in which issues of justice, corruption and officials’ accountability have become the focus of public discussion.

Jaço raises the question of whether these events are finally being exposed, or whether they reveal the deep extent to which the problems have escalated, implying that both may be true.

He also warns of another danger: society is quickly becoming accustomed to shocking news. According to him, people are surprised for a few hours, discuss it for a few days and then await the next name, case file or protest.

For the former head of the American Chamber of Commerce, the main issue is no longer what will be uncovered tomorrow, but what must happen for such news no longer to be perceived as an ordinary day in Albania.
