Eight Days’ Detention for Skopje Police Officer Suspected of Keeping Fine Payments

A police officer from the Skopje Interior Department is suspected of abusing his position, causing at least 85,500 denars in losses to the state budget.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that between April and July, the officer collected fines in cash from citizens at the City Parking public enterprise. Instead of recording the payments through a POS terminal, he is suspected of misappropriating part of the money.

The investigation indicates that, in several traffic violation cases, he allegedly submitted proof of payment belonging to other individuals and cases, while failing to hand over the cash he had received.

The Prosecutor’s Office also suspects that the officer enabled some individuals to pay lower fines or avoid them altogether.

At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, the court ordered him to be detained for eight days.
