Durmishi: Ali Ahmeti Must Explain the Ohrid Agreement and the Status of the Albanian Language to Albanians

In a statement to the media, Besar Durmishi, a representative of the VLEN coalition, sharply criticized Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) leader Ali Ahmeti, accusing him of failing to tell the truth about developments following the Ohrid Agreement and the constitutional status of the Albanian language.

Durmishi referred to the recent statements of Gëzim Ostreni, one of the prominent figures of 2001. According to him, Ostreni said that the Albanian language was not mentioned by name, but remained included through the wording “the 20 percent.”

The VLEN representative also demanded an explanation of how Ali Ahmeti went from calling for the creation of a bilingual Albanian-Macedonian state to accepting compromises that, according to Durmishi, harmed the designation of the Albanian language in the Constitution.

He stated that the DUI had used the Ohrid Agreement as political protection to conceal its failures, corruption and agreements made to the detriment of Albanians over the past two decades. Durmishi stressed that the agreement is the fruit of the people’s sacrifice and cannot be considered anyone’s private property.

Durmishi said that the new politics should no longer continue to defend the myths of the past, but has a responsibility to present the truth to Albanians. According to him, VLEN is taking concrete steps to resolve these issues by turning fair representation from a principle into law and placing decentralization at the center of state priorities.
