DUI Calls Protest in Tetovo Over Street Name Issue

The head of DUI’s branch in Tetovo, Bajram Rexhepi, announced that at tonight’s meeting with the party structures, a decision was made to organize a protest on Friday in Iliria Square.

In a reaction published on Facebook, Rexhepi stresses that the Municipality of Tetovo bears responsibility as a co-author of the cancellation of the names of streets and squares.

He writes that at the meeting of DUI party structures – Tetovo Branch, in the presence of leader Ali Ahmeti, it was decided that Tetovo should not remain silent in the face of what he describes as a humiliating act against the city’s history, identity, and dignity. According to him, after the lack of reaction from the Municipality of Tetovo to the request for an urgent session, and after the reasoning of the Constitutional Court, which states that for nearly a year the municipality failed on four occasions to respond to requests for documentation, it is clear that this is not a matter of negligence, but of co-authorship.

Rexhepi presents this development not simply as an issue of street names, but as an attempt to deny the National Renaissance figures, history, heritage, and every Albanian achievement built with sacrifice over the last 20 years.

He adds that Tetovo is the cradle of Albanian culture, education, and pride, stressing that movements that move Albanians forward have started and will continue to start from this city. For this reason, according to him, there can be no acceptance of turning back, nor of anything less than full dignity.

Finally, he calls on Friday, June 26, at 20:00, from Iliria Square, for every citizen, intellectual, free voice, and patriot, regardless of political conviction, to join the Protest March.
