Diplomacy, weapons and Israel: what could change if Democrats win the midterm elections

Independent analysts in the United States believe Democrats have a good chance of winning a majority in the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate as well in the midterm elections, which will be held on November 3.

A victory would give them a share of power in Washington after two years under Republican leadership.

Trump began the war with Iran on February 28 without first obtaining congressional approval. Meanwhile, Democrats have repeatedly voted for the fighting to end. If they gain control of the House of Representatives or the Senate, they could cut defense spending to pressure Trump to seek congressional authorization to continue the war. They could also require administration officials to testify publicly about their plans.

Support for Ukraine could receive a new boost.

Although Democratic and Republican lawmakers have expressed support for Ukraine, which is facing the Russian invasion, Trump has largely halted direct U.S. financial and military assistance to the country.

Military aid to Israel could be cut off.

Support for Israel among Democrats has declined significantly because of the way the war in Gaza has been conducted, with tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians killed. Other factors cited include the continuing violence in the West Bank, which is occupied by Israel. Democrats could reduce or halt military aid to Israel, which amounted to $3.8 billion in the last fiscal year. This was more than the aid given to any other country.

Democrats aim to impose limits in the defense sector.

This year, Trump requested an unprecedented 67 percent increase in the military budget, bringing it to $1.5 trillion. Democrats blocked the proposal in the Senate, citing the lack of consultation with Congress over the war with Iran and major cuts to social programs.
