Did Hitler kill his niece? Shocking archival documents reopen the nearly 100-year-old mystery

A group of archival documents that have come to light over time is strengthening suspicions that Adolf Hitler may have been responsible for the death of his niece, who was found dead in the dictator’s Munich apartment in 1931. At the time, the incident was officially classified as suicide.

Angela “Geli” Raubal, 23, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest, while the pistol used belonged to Hitler.

According to official documents, Hitler—who was rapidly growing in popularity but had not yet taken control of Germany—had left Munich for Nuremberg the day before his niece’s death. This version of events provided a timeline-based alibi that ruled out his involvement in her death.

However, German historian Harold Sandner says he has found an entry in Munich’s official death register specifying the date and time Raubal’s body was discovered. It was 10:15 a.m. on September 18, 1931. Two death notices uncovered in the archives also bear the same date. If this information is accurate, Raubal’s death would have been recorded around 24 hours earlier than previously thought, placing Hitler in Munich when her body was found, CNN reports. Official records show that he left for Nuremberg only on the afternoon of September 18.

According to historian Sandner, these contradictory records suggest a possible cover-up of the killing by police officials who supported Hitler’s Nazi Party. His findings were first published by the German magazine Der Spiegel and will be discussed in detail in his forthcoming book, “The Death of Angela ‘Geli’ Raubal: Suicide or Foul Play?”, which is expected to be released next month.

Thomas Weber, an expert on Nazi Germany and a longtime acquaintance of Sandner, told CNN that the historian is “extremely meticulous” and that his documents are credible.

A large number of historians believe that Hitler was in love with Raubal and that his attitude toward her had become extremely controlling and possessive. Shortly before her death, Hitler and Raubal are thought to have argued over her desire to move from Munich to Vienna, where she wanted to study music. The newly discovered records do not solve the mystery of how Raubal died.

Nevertheless, they revive questions that have remained unanswered for nearly 100 years about what exactly happened inside his Munich home on the day of her death.
