Debate over Vlora plants reignites, PD: Additional 20 million euro maintenance cost

The project of two floating power plants in Vlora remains a hotspot of political clashes, as opposition forces continue to demand accountability for the agreement, the costs, and the effectiveness of this initiative.

Democrats claim that the administration and competent bodies have wasted public money on an initiative that, in their assessment, has not met the anticipated objectives in electricity generation.

Asked about this topic, Democratic lawmaker Enno Bozdo reiterated his concerns, stating that the Albanian Power Corporation will be forced to spend another 20 million euros to keep the two units in working order, which he says have not operated continuously since their installation in the Vlora area.

He pointed out the lack of clarity over the data, insisted on making the contractual documentation public, and asserted that the financial burden of this operation has fallen unfairly on Albanian taxpayers.

In his remarks, the opposition representative reiterated criticism of an agreement he considers irregular and called for an in-depth investigation, as well as accountability for the management of state funds.

According to data mentioned by Bozdo, the running total bill for the two plants has reached around 90 million euros, while the amount of energy produced has covered only a few days of the country’s needs, not justifying any part of the sum spent. He added that the Democratic Party has repeatedly tried to gain access to the procurement or lease documentation, but it has been kept hidden in violation of the legislation.

The deputy cast doubt that the additional 20 million euros might end up with the same individuals who benefited before, also referring to certain international figures. Meanwhile, he noted a new development: the relevant tender has disappeared from the Public Procurement Agency portal, an action he says indicates panic among the responsible parties.
