Customs director Besmir Beja resigns after Rama’s request to agency heads

Besmir Beja, who held the position of director-general of Customs, has resigned from his post.

The information was reported by Top News journalist Geriola Hate.

The move appears to have come as a result of an order issued by Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday afternoon, in which he asked ministers to obtain the resignations of the heads of state agencies, both in the capital and in the districts.

According to government sources cited by Top Channel, these officials will temporarily remain in their posts, as the first stage of the process consists solely of formalizing their resignations through a document.

Later, in a second stage, the performance of each official who has submitted a resignation will be evaluated. So far, the executive has issued no official statement regarding this wave of requested resignations.

The same government sources told Top Channel that the initiative is linked to the prime minister’s efforts to deepen his vision of establishing meritocracy in the public administration.

The move is also seen as a preparatory step for the new minister of Public Administration, Adea Pirdeni, who received parliament’s approval the previous day and was sworn in at the Presidency today.

The number of agency heads at the central and local levels who are required to resign under the request exceeds 130.

This is not the first time Prime Minister Rama has taken such action.

Similar requests for resignations were also made in 2021 and 2023.
