One of the most severe migration crises in recent years has unfolded in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where at least 57 people died while attempting to enter from Morocco. Around 50,000 migrants crossed the border in just 24 hours.

The massive influx placed extraordinary pressure on the city of approximately 85,000 residents. Thousands of people, including unaccompanied children, were forced to remain on the streets and in parks.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as a “violation of Spain’s territorial integrity.” He accused criminal human-trafficking networks of organizing the mass crossings.
According to a statement from the Spanish government, more than 48,000 people have voluntarily returned to Morocco. Additional army and police forces have been deployed to Ceuta to restore border control, The Guardian reports.
Sánchez announced that a temporary reception center would be established to register and identify people, and that procedures would be expedited to deport those who do not have the legal right to remain in Spain. The authorities also plan to install a buoy barrier at sea near Tarajal Beach to make the border clearly visible.
The crisis has also sparked political clashes within the European Union. Italy called for Spain to be temporarily suspended from the Schengen Area, claiming that Madrid’s approach to migration had encouraged migrant smuggling. The Spanish government strongly rejected this position.
The European Commission clarified that Ceuta and Melilla operate under a special arrangement within Schengen, meaning there is no risk of migrants moving freely to the rest of Europe.
Meanwhile, European Council President António Costa and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their support for Spain. The European Union has also called emergency meetings to coordinate its response to the crisis.
Spanish authorities consider the incident a severe humanitarian crisis. Many of the victims drowned at sea, while others died during the clash at the Tarajal border crossing. Investigations to determine the full circumstances are ongoing.
