Court Orders One Month of Pretrial Detention for Egzon Reshani, Suspected of Several Criminal Offenses

Egzon Reshani will remain in pretrial detention for one month, until September 3, 2026, after the Serious Crimes Department of the Basic Court in Prizren approved the State Prosecution’s request for the measure.

The Court’s announcement states that Reshani is suspected of three criminal offenses: two counts of “Coercion” committed jointly, the criminal offense of “Unlawful Deprivation of Liberty” committed jointly, and the continuous criminal offense of “Intimidation During Criminal Proceedings.”

Based on the evidence obtained at this stage of the investigation, the Court found that there is a grounded suspicion that, during 2025, the defendant acted jointly with others and as part of an organized group. He is suspected of using threats to force the injured party to take actions detrimental to his own property, causing him financial losses as well as fear, anxiety, insecurity, and concern for his own life and the lives of his family members.

The suspicions also relate to an incident in 2025, when the defendant, together with four other people, allegedly held the injured party against his will, unlawfully depriving him of his liberty.

Regarding 2026, Reshani is suspected of using force, serious threats, and other forms of coercion against the injured party at various times, with the aim of preventing him from providing truthful statements and information to the Prosecution and thereby obstructing the criminal proceedings.

In explaining the necessity of pretrial detention, the Court emphasized that E.R. had been a fugitive since January 2026 and was wanted on suspicion of several criminal offenses. According to the Court, these circumstances create a significant risk that, if released, he would leave the Republic of Kosovo to evade criminal responsibility.

The Court also noted that the investigation is ongoing and that additional material evidence is expected to be collected, the injured party and witnesses interviewed, and statements taken from the defendants. It found that allowing him to remain at liberty would give the defendant an opportunity to influence the injured party to change his earlier statements, undermining the normal course of the criminal proceedings.

After analyzing the parties’ claims presented at the hearing, the Court concluded that, given the seriousness of the criminal offenses and the circumstances in which they are suspected to have been committed, only pretrial detention could ensure the defendant’s presence and the unobstructed continuation of the criminal proceedings.
