Constitutive session to continue on Wednesday, still no certainty over votes for president

After a series of meetings, it appeared that the parties were moving closer to an agreement on the election of the president.

Following several discussions between Albin Kurti, leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, and Lumir Abdixhiku, head of the Democratic League of Kosovo, an agreement was reached on a consensus candidate.

At their latest meeting, held on August 31, the two leaders appeared before the media alongside a third person.

He was Bekim Sejdiu, who was proposed for the post of president.

The agreement between Kurti and Abdixhiku created the impression that it could help resolve part of the political deadlock, but this situation lasted only a short time.

Opposition began immediately afterward, while six LDK lawmakers declared that they would not support Sejdiu.

Some of them openly criticized the agreement reached by the two leaders, indicating that it had not secured the support of all LDK lawmakers.

LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku also reacted to this development, continuing to support the agreement with Kurti.

Despite this, opposing statements from LDK lawmakers continued in the days that followed.

Meanwhile, representatives of the LVV insisted on the implementation of the agreement.

Bekim Sejdiu’s candidacy was not opposed only within part of the LDK. The PDK also came out against it.

PDK leader Bedri Hamza declared that lawmakers from his party would not vote for Bekim Sejdiu as president.

Meanwhile, the PDK and the Alliance continued to demand the constitution of the Assembly.

Their representatives went to the Assembly almost every 48 hours, calling on LVV leader Albin Kurti to convene the constitutive session.

The session, which began earlier, has still not been concluded.

It is expected to resume on Wednesday, September 9.

During this session, it will become clear whether the Assembly will manage to be constituted, while the impact of developments following the August 31 agreement also remains to be seen.
