Claims of $57 million and gold in the home of an Iraqi lawmaker remain unconfirmed

A claim has spread rapidly on social media alleging that authorities in Iraq seized $57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of pure gold, and gold-decorated underwear during a search of the home of lawmaker Hind Al-Abbasi.

But so far, Iraqi institutions have not verified such an account.

In viral posts on Instagram and X, the operation has been presented as one of the biggest anti-corruption blows in Iraq’s history. At the same time, photos of golden underwear have circulated widely online, triggering numerous reactions.

However, reporting considered credible presents a different picture of the event.

According to Iraqi media, also cited by Gulf News, the anti-corruption operation was carried out against lawmaker Alia Nassif, not Hind Al-Abbasi. During the search of Nassif’s home, authorities reportedly seized more than $15.5 million and a large quantity of gold.

In this case, authorities arrested Alia Nassif along with her son, who had previously served as chief of staff to former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani.

Meanwhile, Hind Al-Abbasi is reported to have been arrested as part of a corruption investigation, but there is no official confirmation that $57 million, 27 kilograms of gold, or golden underwear were found in her home.

Even artificial intelligence platforms such as Grok and Gemini, when asked about the accuracy of this report, refer to the operation against Alia Nassif and not Hind Al-Abbasi.

Up to this point, the Iraqi government has not confirmed the viral claims about the seizure of $57 million, 27 kilograms of gold, and gold-covered underwear, so they remain unverified.
