Chinese artificial intelligence challenges American dominance, Trump under increased pressure

The White House is considering new measures against artificial intelligence models developed in China, as the success of Moonshot’s Kimi K3 model becomes increasingly evident. This model is gaining ground thanks to a significantly lower cost than offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The U.S. administration alleges that Moonshot built its model by illegally copying the functionalities of Claude, Anthropic’s assistant, and by utilizing advanced Nvidia chips in violation of U.S. export bans. As a result, the Commerce Department has opened an investigation into several Chinese firms, while the Treasury secretary has warned of possible sanctions against China.

Meanwhile, a group of 179 American startups have appealed to the Trump administration with a request not to ban open models developed outside the United States. According to them, such a ban would only benefit American giants and would significantly increase costs for small businesses and independent developers.

Nvidia’s CEO has also spoken out against the restrictions, highlighting the quality of Chinese models and the need for them to remain accessible to American companies. The global race for dominance in artificial intelligence has become one of the hottest fronts of US-China rivalry.

Pressure on President Trump is mounting to respond to China’s rapid progress in AI. While the White House accuses Chinese companies of technology theft, startups and large corporations warn that restrictive measures could undermine American competitiveness on the global stage.
