Ceuta faces the consequences of the migrant influx, with around 13,000 people still stranded

Around 13,000 migrants, including adults and minors, remain stranded in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta following the mass arrivals recorded on July 30 and 31, Spanish authorities report.

According to Spain’s Minister for Youth and Children, Cira Rego, around 2,100 of the total number are minors. Nearly 700 of them are girls, while the number of adults is close to 11,000.

Rego has called for the transfer of minors to mainland Spain to be expedited, with the aim of easing the burden on the local community. Meanwhile, authorities continue to identify children who have not yet been registered in the official protection system.

At the same time, procedures are under way for minors who have expressed a desire to return to their families in Morocco. Before their return, thorough checks must be carried out to confirm that a safe and supportive family environment awaits them in their place of origin.

To address the situation, the Spanish government has planned the creation of new dedicated facilities in Ceuta. These structures are intended to expand capacity for processing travelers and shorten the repatriation procedures for people who do not meet the conditions for international protection.
