Case File 23” could become an important step in the fight against impunity

Arrests carried out as part of “Case File 23” mark progress in efforts to shed light on war crimes in Kosovo, particularly in the north of the country, where investigations into many cases have been limited or delayed. This is the assessment of security expert Hysen Gecaj.

According to Gecaj, the success of the operation should not be judged simply by the number of arrests. More important is whether the investigations will secure new evidence, uncover the chain of responsibility and help clarify the fate of civilian victims.

He stresses that prosecuting war crimes remains a legal and moral responsibility that cannot be neglected as the years pass.

“If the Special Prosecutor’s Office succeeds in building cases based on strong evidence and proper judicial procedures, ‘Case File 23’ could mark an important development in the fight against impunity,” he said.

Gecaj says that, for the victims and their families, uncovering the truth and delivering justice are essential for reconciliation and for establishing lasting peace in Kosovo.

In this context, he sees the discovery of the remains of the group of intellectuals as bringing some relief from the pain felt by their families and friends, as well as by the people of Kosovo.

“Justice, however delayed, is essential and inevitable, even though it cannot compensate the family and the people of Kosovo,” Gecaj concluded.
