Cana: No new cases of West Nile fever for four days, eight hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic

Eight patients with confirmed neuroinvasive West Nile fever are being treated at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Skopje. Two of them are in serious condition and have been admitted to the intensive care unit.

Fadil Cana, the clinic’s director, said today that no new patient with a confirmed diagnosis of West Nile fever had been admitted over the past four days.

Cana stressed that the Infectious Diseases Clinic had not received any new confirmed cases of the disease for four days.

The two patients in serious condition have been intubated and are receiving mechanical ventilation, while the other six are being treated in the clinic’s wards.

Most of the hospitalized patients are from Skopje, while one is from Sveti Nikole. Nearly all the patients are over 60.

Speaking about the fatalities, Cana confirmed that the eighth death from West Nile fever was recorded over the weekend. The patient was a 70-year-old man who had been admitted to the clinic on August 25 in extremely serious condition.

Immediately after admission, he was transferred to intensive care, where he was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. However, despite treatment and the efforts of the medical team, the patient died after spending 10 days in the hospital.
