Britain: 51-year-old transgender man James Groves sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for abusing a minor

James Groves, 51, has been sentenced in Britain to 20 years and six months in prison after being found guilty of a series of sexual offenses against a minor.

The sentence was handed down by Bristol Crown Court. According to British media, Groves was found guilty of 19 criminal offenses, including nine counts of rape and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The prosecution claimed that the girl had been repeatedly sexually abused over several months, during a period when she was still a minor.

During the court proceedings, the young woman spoke about the impact the abuse had had on her life and childhood.

“I am just a shell of my former self. I cannot remember large parts of my childhood because of what Groves did and the trauma I experienced,” she testified.

“People have told me that I am no longer the bright and lively girl I once was. I have lost my childhood and I will never get it back,” the victim added.

During the investigation, she told police that Groves had sexually abused her when she was a minor.

Detective Ben Perrett, of the Avon and Somerset Police Criminal Investigation Department, described the case as an “extremely disturbing” instance of ongoing abuse against a young girl.

According to Perrett, Groves had targeted and manipulated the girl over a long period. He allegedly used deception to gain her trust and establish control over her.

“I would like to commend the victim for her courage in speaking out and supporting the investigation. Her courage was essential to securing this conviction and preventing further harm,” Perrett said.

He stressed that police would continue investigating and prosecuting cases of sexual abuse, particularly when vulnerable people are involved.

Groves’s sentence brought the court proceedings over the 19 criminal offenses to an end, while the victim will face the consequences of the abuse described during the trial for a long time to come.
