The trial of Mayor Erion Veliaj has been postponed again because of a boycott by lawyers who oppose the regulations of the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO).

As a result of the boycott, the Special Court has fined the lawyers 100,000 lek each. Veliaj’s hearing has been rescheduled for October 27, and the time limits on his pretrial detention have again been suspended.
GJKKO also said it would call on lawyers from the free legal aid service under the Ministry of Justice to represent the defendants at the next hearing on October 27.
Since September 7, lawyers have been boycotting proceedings at the Special Court in protest against new regulations banning the possession and use of mobile phones in courtrooms.
