Body of Italian Minister’s Husband Found More Than a Month After He Dived into Lake and Failed to Resurface

Luigi Cavallari, the husband of Italian Minister Eugenia Roccella, was found dead on the morning of August 4 in Lake Vico, in the province of Viterbo. He had been missing since June 27.

The tragedy occurred while Cavallari was boating on the lake with his wife. After diving into the water, he failed to resurface, and the minister herself raised the alarm over his disappearance. Initial indications suggest that his death may have been caused by a medical episode resulting from thermal shock.

The search continued for more than a month, but conditions in Lake Vico made the teams’ work difficult. Poor underwater visibility and layers of mud, silt and algae on the lakebed hindered efforts to locate the body.

During the operation, rescue teams used sonar equipment and underwater robots to verify every signal detected by their instruments.

After the search ended with the recovery of the body, Roccella said that “a period of agonizing uncertainty has come to an end.” She expressed gratitude to all the agencies involved in the operation, including the Viterbo Prefecture, firefighters, police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza, and also thanked the authorities and residents of Ronciglione for their support.

The minister stressed that recovering the body does not ease the pain caused by the loss, but at least allows the family to say a final farewell to their loved one.
