Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz, One Dead and Two Still Missing

One person has died and two others remain missing after a boat with 19 people on board capsized in the San Francisco Bay, according to American authorities.

The San Francisco Fire Department reported that the alarm was raised around 3:35 p.m. local time for a boat suspected of having caught fire about 550 meters from Alcatraz Island. When emergency crews arrived in the area, they found the vessel overturned.

There were 19 people on board, of whom 16 were rescued alive. The search operation continues for the two missing individuals.

One passenger died despite rescue teams’ efforts to revive them. A dog that was on the boat was also found dead.

Videos published by local media show the remains of the small motorboat sinking into the waters of the San Francisco Bay.

It is still unclear whether the boat was approaching Alcatraz Island, departing from it, or was in that area for some other reason.

Alcatraz, the famous prison that has operated as a tourist attraction for decades, is located in a part of the bay where the water temperature usually remains very low throughout the year, making survival difficult in similar accidents.
