Berlin Accuses Moscow over Leipzig Incident, Putin: Punitive Measures Are a Serious Mistake

German authorities have held Russia responsible for a suspected hybrid attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, where several drones loaded with explosives were found at the beginning of August.

According to German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, the investigation has concluded that Moscow was behind the incident. For this reason, Berlin announced that it would impose punitive measures, but Russian President Vladimir Putin described them as a serious mistake.

“In my opinion, this clearly runs counter to the interests of the German people. I think the German government’s response is linked to the upcoming election campaigns,” Putin said.

Dobrindt cited the police investigation, the way the attack was carried out and intelligence information, which, he said, clearly prove Russian involvement. Following the attempted drone attack using an explosive-laden aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Berlin’s official stance toward Moscow has hardened: Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn is expected to close, while checks for entry into Germany will be tightened.

The importance of Leipzig/Halle Airport is linked to its role as a logistics hub for cargo transport and the conduct of military operations. The facility is also used by NATO and the Ukrainian company Antonov Airlines to deliver military supplies.

The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, also said that Russia’s involvement in the incident was clear. She warned that Moscow was becoming increasingly provocative, raising concerns about a renewed escalation of tensions in Europe.
