Attempt to smuggle 200,000 euros prevented at Tabanoc, Hungarian national hides cash in several places

Macedonian customs authorities have thwarted a serious attempt to bring foreign currency into the country illegally. A Hungarian national was caught at the Tabanoc border crossing with 200,000 euros in undeclared cash, in violation of current legislation on declaring monetary assets.

Due to suspicious indications, his vehicle underwent a full inspection. During the detailed search, customs officers discovered a black fabric bag containing 65,000 euros. As they continued the inspection, they found another small black bag containing 37,650 euros inside a backpack on the back seat, concealed behind a computer device.

The final stage of the inspection also uncovered an additional black bag containing 97,350 euros. The money was hidden inside a suitcase placed among other items in the rear of the vehicle.

According to an official statement from the Customs Administration, the traveler was allowed to retain 10,000 euros from the total amount of undeclared cash, in accordance with the Foreign Exchange Operations Law. The remaining 190,000 euros was seized, and a Certificate of Retained Funds was issued.
