Attack Near Pride Parade Sparks Debate in Germany; Suspect Had Been Convicted but Not Imprisoned

German institutions have come under fierce criticism over their handling of the case of Abdul Ballout, the 21-year-old suspected of carrying out the bloody attack near the Pride Parade in Berlin. The incident left one woman dead and 29 people injured.

Investigators’ findings indicate that Ballout is suspected of initially using a rented van to drive into the crowd near Tiergarten park, before attacking passersby with a machete.

Just a few months before the attack, in May, the 21-year-old had been found guilty of preparing a serious act of violence with a terrorist motive and was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison. However, the sentence was suspended after the court took into account the time he had spent in pretrial detention in Lebanon and Germany, as well as his claims that he had broken away from the terrorist organization ISIS.

The decision has prompted strong reactions in the political arena. The head of the parliamentary committee responsible for overseeing the intelligence services called for tougher measures against extremists, arguing that protecting citizens must take precedence over everything else.

The head of the German Police Association also criticized the justice system, accusing it of excessive leniency. Meanwhile, Bavaria’s interior minister described the decision to suspend the sentence as “catastrophic” and stressed that judges must be made aware of their responsibility for public safety.
