At the Peak of the Production Season, Vegetable Prices Soar

Vegetable prices recorded a sharp increase in June, precisely during the period when domestic production and seasonal supply are expected to be at their highest.

According to official INSTAT inflation data, the group “Vegetables, greens and legumes” became 8.5% more expensive compared to the same period a year earlier. The increase is nearly three times higher than average food inflation, which stood at 3%.

The trend in vegetable prices appears paradoxical, as June coincides with the peak production period for a large share of agricultural crops.

Under normal conditions, the increase in supply during the season should put downward pressure on prices, but the opposite has happened in retail markets.

The price hike may be linked to production costs, as well as increased demand during the tourist season. The highest increase among food products was recorded by fish and other seafood, at 9%. They were followed by vegetables at 8.5%.

Meat prices rose by 4.2%, while milk, other dairy products and eggs became 2.4% more expensive.

Sugar, sweets and confectionery products rose by 2.5%, while oils and fats increased by 1.7%. More moderate growth was seen in cereals and cereal-based products, at only 0.9%.

In the opposite direction, fresh and dried fruit were the only group to record a decline in prices, by 2.8% compared to a year earlier.

The data show that pressure on household budgets continues to come mainly from basic consumer goods, with vegetables, despite the abundant agricultural season, recording one of the highest price increases.

During the summer months, consumption by hotels, restaurants and service businesses increases, especially in coastal areas, putting pressure on supply and prices in the domestic market.

At the same time, part of agricultural production is being directed toward exports when foreign markets offer more favorable prices, limiting the quantities left for domestic consumers.

Moreover, the statistical group includes not only typical seasonal vegetables, but also greens, legumes and imported products, which do not follow the same seasonal pattern as domestic production.

The rise in vegetable prices is the result of a combination of factors, starting with limited agricultural production, high demand from tourism, rising exports, and increased production and transport costs./Monitor
