ASH: Students want the jurisprudence exam entirely in Albanian, not slogans and calculators

Albanian students demanded that the jurisprudence exam be held entirely in Albanian, without slogans or calculations involving hours and calculators.

Despite this, Justice Minister Jeton Shasivari is offering them 12 subjects in Albanian and two in Macedonian, describing this as an achievement.

This position contradicts the one held by the same person in February this year, when, as a university professor, he called the refusal to administer the jurisprudence exam in Albanian a violation of the Constitution and the law, arguing that the exam assesses legal knowledge, not knowledge of the Macedonian language.

Therefore, Shasivari should explain to Albanian students what has changed between February and October: the Constitution, the law, or his position?

In May, VLEN promised that the solution would not be partial, but complete and long-term. Just five months later, its minister has put forward a partial proposal, which the students have rejected.

Shasivari’s statement, “We’ll speak Albanian, damn it,” becomes even more ironic when his proposal stipulates that part of the exam will remain in Macedonian.

Shasivari should also say which legal provision he relies on to limit the exam to two practical subjects. If he considered this a right guaranteed by the Constitution and the law in February, why is he now calling for new interpretations and consultations?

The law does not change according to the office you hold, and legal principles cannot apply one way to Professor Shasivari and another way to Minister Shasivari, the Alliance for Albanians said in its statement.
