Arrested in Dubai and Extradited to Dublin, Suspected Cartel Boss Faces Organized Crime Charges

Daniel Kinahan, 49, who is considered one of the suspected leaders of a powerful international criminal network, has been brought from the United Arab Emirates to Ireland to face justice.

Under tight security, the Irish government aircraft carrying Kinahan landed at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnell, southwest of Dublin.

He was arrested in the United Arab Emirates in April. Before his extradition, the Irish Prison Service had secured an armored, blast-resistant vehicle for his transfer. Security at the high-security Portlaoise Prison has also reportedly been stepped up.

The extraordinary measures taken by the Irish authorities to transport Kinahan are linked to the high-profile nature of the case and potential security risks.

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency says the Kinahan cartel has been involved in the international trafficking of large quantities of drugs and weapons for more than two decades.

Kinahan is expected to be formally charged in the coming hours before appearing before Ireland’s Special Criminal Court. The three-judge court hears serious criminal cases and cases related to organized crime.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has welcomed the cooperation between the Irish and United Arab Emirates authorities in tackling international organized crime.

However, Martin did not comment directly on the case, explaining that he did not want to influence the judicial process. He stressed that the Irish police should be commended for their continued work in combating organized crime.

Kinahan’s lawyer has previously rejected claims that his client runs a criminal organization. His responsibility in relation to any charges brought against him will be determined during the trial.
