Applications Close for Prosecutor General Post as High Prosecutorial Council Begins Vetting Four Official Candidates

The High Prosecutorial Council has begun procedures to vet the candidates who have expressed interest in the post of Prosecutor General, following the application deadline. Under the procedures, the Council has 45 days to review the documentation and verify whether the candidates meet the legal criteria to remain in the race.

The application deadline expired at midnight on August 1, and by that date, four prosecutors had officially submitted their applications for the position. The candidates are Adnan Xholi, a prosecutor at SPAK; Rovena Zoto, a prosecutor at the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office; prosecutor Ylli Pjetërnikaj; and prosecutor Fatjona Memçaj.

Meanwhile, confirmation is pending on whether any other candidates sent their documentation by mail in the final days. Following the initial stage, the High Prosecutorial Council and the responsible commission will begin checks with the relevant institutions, including asset checks and inquiries with the tax and customs authorities, the National Bureau of Investigation, intelligence institutions, and disciplinary bodies.

Only candidates who pass the vetting process will proceed to the hearings. Applications for the post of Prosecutor General were opened because the mandate of the current head of the General Prosecutor’s Office, Olsian Çela, expires in December.
