Anthropic opens biology lab in bid to use AI in medical research

Anthropic has begun expanding its activities beyond software development by establishing a biology lab in the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to Reuters, the company aims to harness artificial intelligence to accelerate biological research and contribute to the discovery of new treatments.

The facility is a “wet lab,” a physical space where experiments involving biological materials are conducted. At the same time, Anthropic is exploring the possibility of using its AI models to control equipment and robots involved in experiments.

Company executives have clarified that the project is still in its early stages and that laboratory processes continue to require human oversight.

One of the main areas under consideration is the use of AI in the study of rare diseases, as well as in fields where developing new treatments is particularly complex and costly.

So far, Anthropic has not developed any drug created by artificial intelligence. The objective is for AI to assist scientists in analyzing data, designing experiments and identifying potential new treatments.
