Andy Burnham Enters the Race to Become Prime Minister After Starmer’s Resignation

Andy Burnham has announced that he will run to succeed Keir Starmer at the head of the British government after the latter resigned from the post.

In a statement published on social media, Burnham, considered one of the best-known figures in the Labour Party, expressed gratitude to Starmer and to his role in leading the country. “Keir has served our country greatly and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during a very challenging period,” Burnham wrote.

He stressed that the selection of a successor should move forward in an orderly and responsible way, while also confirming his own involvement in the race. “I will put myself forward in this process,” he said.

According to Burnham, the issues requiring the greatest attention are the economy, the cost of living, public services, housing, and prospects for young people. “The country needs stability, seriousness, and a continued focus on the issues that matter most,” he said.

Following Starmer’s departure, the race to lead the Labour Party and become prime minister is expected to open at a time when the party is under pressure to restore public trust and maintain its hold on government.
