American Chamber of Commerce appeals to new leaders: Prioritize American liquefied gas

The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo invites the holders of new governing mandates to consider as a priority issue connecting the country to the regional liquefied natural gas (LNG) network from the United States, describing this as a key component in Kosovo’s future energy architecture.

According to a public statement, this chamber emphasizes that the country is going through a defining phase for the fate of its energy system and that the choices to be made in the future will have direct consequences on supply stability, economic growth, and the state’s competitiveness.

Representatives of the American Chamber underscore that the debate over the direction of the energy strategy cannot focus simply on the initial costs of projects or on the alternatives known to date.

“Kosovo is at a historic crossroads for the future of its energy sector. The decisions to be adopted in the coming months and years will determine not only how electricity is produced, but also the degree of energy independence, economic vitality, and the ability to respond to the demands of an expanding economy,” the statement says.

Pointing to the fact that Kosovo still relies on depreciated thermal power plants and large quantities of imported energy, the American Chamber argues that the speed of building new generation sources is an element of vital strategic importance.

“Every year of delay in building new domestic capacities translates into continued dependence on the volatility of neighboring markets, heavy import bills, and an insecure supply,” the reaction adds.

For the American Chamber, the ball is in the court of the new institutions, which now have the opportunity to formulate an energy policy based on expertise and Kosovo’s long-term interests.

In this context, the organization appeals to the authorities that access to the regional LNG infrastructure from the U.S. be a priority strategic objective.

“The American Chamber asks them to prioritize access to the regional corridors for American liquefied natural gas and to see this opportunity as a strategic investment for energy security, economic vitality, and Kosovo’s perspective,” the statement concludes.
