Albania has 28,000 more women than men, with migration and life expectancy playing a role

Data for the end of 2025 show that 1,182,000 women and 1,154,000 men lived in Albania, meaning there were 28,000 more women than men. This ratio exists despite birth statistics in recent years showing a surplus of boys.

In total, the country’s resident population at the end of 2025 was 2,336,000. Compared with a year earlier, the number of men fell by 1.3%, while the number of women declined by 1.0%.

During 2025, the population’s natural increase was positive. There were 1,063 more births than deaths among women, while the difference among men was 84.

Higher male emigration and women’s longer life expectancy are considered the main factors behind this change in the gender ratio. The greater presence of women is also evident in education, where 65% have higher education. In politics, however, women accounted for only one-third of Parliament.
