Alarm in Germany/ Third drone and military-grade explosive found near Leipzig airport

Another drone, along with a military-grade explosive device, has been discovered near Leipzig-Halle Airport. The discovery comes after the incident on August 4, when a drone carrying explosives was found at the airport and a DHL transport aircraft collided with a suspicious object.

NDR and WDR, as well as the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, report that the third drone was found on August 14 in Kampelsketal, a rural area near the western edge of the airport. According to authorities’ suspicions, it may have been used in an attack on Ukrainian cargo aircraft, but it is believed to have malfunctioned.

Approximately 50 grams of Hexogen, also known as T4, were found in the same area. It is a highly explosive material used primarily for military purposes.

The first case was recorded on August 4, when a drone carrying explosives was discovered among Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig-Halle Airport. The device’s detonator had been damaged, and this is believed to have prevented the explosion from being activated.

During the same night, a DHL cargo aircraft collided with an unidentified object that was traveling at a speed of several hundred kilometers per hour. The aircraft sustained limited damage, while subsequent inspections found neither the drone nor any fragments of it. Der Spiegel writes that it remains unclear whether the object was a drone or, for example, a bird.

Authorities also found a technical device near the runway, in the abandoned village of Kursdorf, which may have been used to guide or control drones.

It is still unknown how the attack was organized and who may have been responsible.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has described the incident as “a serious attack on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure.” Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrid called it a “hybrid attack scenario,” leaving open the possibility that foreign forces may also have been involved.

Security sources suspect that Russian intelligence services may have participated in the planning. Moscow has rejected all these accusations.
