Agron Qalaj takes part in the presentation of the OSCE report on war crimes trials

Acting Chief State Prosecutor Agron Qalaj was present today at the presentation of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo’s report on the monitoring of war crimes trials.

The OSCE Mission in Kosovo report on monitoring war crimes trials presents findings from seven years of systematic monitoring of war crimes proceedings. It assesses compliance with domestic and international fair trial standards, identifies key developments and challenges, and offers recommendations for the responsible institutions.

During his remarks, Acting Chief Prosecutor Qalaj stressed that handling war crimes cases is one of the most sensitive and challenging areas of criminal justice. He underlined that these cases require professionalism, impartiality, independence, and full implementation of the law.

He pointed out that cases built on evidence, the quality of investigations, and respect for fair trial standards constitute essential elements for guaranteeing justice and strengthening confidence in the prosecution system.

Also, Acting Chief Prosecutor Qalaj expressed appreciation for the engagement of the Special Prosecution Office of the Republic of Kosovo in handling these cases, stressing that important steps have been taken to strengthen professional capacities and increase the institutional focus on the investigation and prosecution of war crimes.

Referring to the OSCE report, Qalaj described it as an important contribution for justice institutions and as an opportunity to reflect on practices that can be further improved.

At the end of his remarks, Acting Chief State Prosecutor Mr. Agron Qalaj reaffirmed the commitment of the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor to continue supporting the Special Prosecution Office, with the aim of strengthening quality, professionalism, and respect for human rights in the prosecution of war crimes cases. He also thanked the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and all justice professionals for their continued engagement and for supporting the rule of law.
