Abdixhiku: Identifying the victims in Zubin Potok is an important step toward uncovering the crimes

Lumir Abdixhiku, chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo, has reacted following the identification in Zubin Potok of the human remains of Idriz Rrecaj, Adem Beqiri and Salih Mëziu.

The three Albanian intellectuals were abducted and disappeared by Serbian forces on April 19, 1999, during the war in Kosovo.

According to a statement from the Democratic League of Kosovo, Abdixhiku described the identification, after 27 years of waiting, as devastating news for the families and, at the same time, as an important step toward uncovering war crimes in Kosovo.

Abdixhiku said that, after 27 years, Kosovo had received the long-awaited news about the identification of the human remains of Idriz Rrecaj, a prominent activist of the Democratic League of Kosovo and a Hero of Kosovo, as well as those of his fellow activists, Adem Beqiri and Salih Mëziu.

He stressed that the families of the three men, who were abducted and disappeared on April 19, 1999, had waited 27 years to learn the truth about the fate of their loved ones.

Recalling Idriz Rrecaj’s contribution, Abdixhiku said that he had led the Democratic League of Kosovo’s branch in Skënderaj and, during the years of resistance, had been engaged in political and national organization.

According to the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, uncovering the fate of every missing person and documenting war crimes must be a permanent responsibility of Kosovo’s institutions.

Abdixhiku also commemorated the thousands of victims and missing persons of the war, as well as the families that continue to await answers about their loved ones.

On behalf of the Democratic League of Kosovo, he conveyed his condolences to the Rrecaj, Beqiri and Mëziu families, emphasizing that preserving the memory of those killed and missing is part of the institutional and social responsibility to document the past.
