A quarter century without the commander of three wars, Tahir Sinani, commemorated in Kosovo

Twenty-five years have passed since that bitter day when Tahir Sinani, one of the most prominent figures of Albanian resistance, gave his life on the battlefield. He stands out as one of the few commanders who experienced and led forces on three different fronts: in Kosovo, in the Preševo Valley, and in North Macedonia during 2001.

Born in the village of Gri in Tropojë on May 25, 1964, after his training in Albania’s military academies, he served as an officer and educator of troops. However, the national call drove him to leave his position and join the Kosovo Liberation Army as soon as the conflict erupted. Within the KLA, his activity focused on the Pashtrik Operational Zone and the core leadership of the General Staff. His contribution was crucial in structuring the forces and commanding the Battle of Pashtrik, which remains one of the most glorious chapters of that war.

With the end of the fighting in Kosovo, Sinani did not stop his engagement. Initially he was appointed head of units in the Kosovo Protection Corps (TMK), only to then line up among the fighters in the Preševo, Medveđa, and Bujanovac Valley. His cycle of national commitment continued in 2001, when he joined the National Liberation Army in North Macedonia, taking command of the 116th Brigade.

His end came on July 29, 2001, on the outskirts of Gostivar, during the armed clashes in North Macedonia. Historical records show that he fell together with four comrades-in-arms, as a result of a powerful explosion at an ammunition storage site. A year later, in 2002, his remains were brought to the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Landovicë, Prizren, where they rest to this day.

Known by the epithet “the commander of three wars,” the name of Tahir Sinani remains inextricably linked to the three largest conflicts that shaped Albanian military engagement in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In honor of this anniversary, Kosovo has organized a series of commemorative activities. Throughout the day, homages were held at the Landovicë cemetery and near his statue in Prizren, while a special academy was also dedicated to him at the University Library of Prishtina.
