The tremors were recorded at a depth of just 15 kilometers and damaged more than 1,000 homes, as well as dozens of hospitals, schools, and public buildings.
The situation is worsening due to aftershocks, landslides, and impassable roads. Fearing building collapses, many residents are spending the night outdoors, while shortages of food and drinking water have emerged in some areas.
Hospitals damaged by the earthquake are providing services in emergency tents. Residents and local authorities have reported that aid is arriving late, while some villages remain isolated.
Nitung village, one of the worst-affected areas, was without electricity and communications for nearly two days. Rescue teams were able to reach it only after roads blocked by landslides were cleared.
This is considered Indonesia’s deadliest earthquake since 2022. Rescue teams are continuing their operations, while efforts are underway to deliver aid to the thousands of displaced people.
