36 years since the violent shutdown of Radio Television of Prishtina

On July 5, 1990, on the orders of the Serbian government, Serbian forces halted the broadcasting of Radio Television of Prishtina, known for short as RTP or TVP.

This was the first Albanian-language television station in Kosovo, and the interruption of its programming was carried out through violent measures implemented by the Serbian government during that year.

Until that time, the only news outlet was Radio Prishtina, which had been operating since 1945. It took 19 years until 1974 for Television of Prishtina to begin broadcasting, before it was later shut down in 1990 because of the Serbian government.

Radio Prishtina began operating immediately after the Second World War, in 1945, initially in Prizren and later moved to Prishtina.

At the beginning of 1974, TVP did not have electronic technology, so all programming material was recorded using film technology and then sent to TV Belgrade, where the film was developed and later edited for broadcast.

Until November 29, 1975, broadcasting was carried out by TV Belgrade.

During the summer of 1974, the first outside broadcast van (OB Van) arrived from England with four black-and-white cameras.

After the end of the war in Kosovo in 1999, conditions were created for the free establishment of Kosovo television stations. One of them was Radio Television of Kosovo, which was placed in the same building where the former RTP had been, on Xhemajl Prishtina Street in Prishtina.

After the war in Kosovo, the materials and facilities of Radio Television of Prishtina came under the administration of Radio Television of Kosovo.

Today, the Public Radio Television of Kosovo operates in the RTP building.
