27 years after 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed expected to face justice

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, considered the main organizer of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, is expected to appear in court in June 2028, according to US media reports.

The US military court has set June 2028 as the start date for his trial. However, the deadline is not final, as procedural issues remain to be resolved, especially those related to admissible evidence during the trial.

Before his arrest in Pakistan in March 2003, Mohammed was one of the most important figures in the al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

He was transferred to the US military prison at Guantanamo in September 2006 and continues to be held there. Previously, he had been imprisoned in secret CIA facilities, including one in Poland, where he was interrogated and tortured.

In July 2025, a US appeals court overturned the plea agreement. The deal provided that Mohammed and two other prisoners would avoid the death penalty in exchange for pleading guilty.

Guantanamo, a center of debate on human rights

The Guantanamo prison is located on a US Navy base on Cuban territory that the United States leases. It was opened after the 9/11 attacks, on the orders of then-US President George W. Bush.

At its peak, this detention center held about 800 suspected terrorists. Currently, the number of prisoners there has been reduced to just a few.

For years, human rights organizations have called for the closure of Guantanamo, describing it as a symbol of human rights violations and international law.

Although it has faced numerous controversies, the prison continues to operate. Meanwhile, the case of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed remains one of the most important legal proceedings related to the 9/11 attacks.
