The Institute of the Directorate for Hydrometeorological Affairs announced that the country will be hit by very hot weather tomorrow, while maximum temperatures in some areas will exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

However, a gradual drop in temperatures is expected from Sunday onward.

Afternoons will be marked by local instability, heavy rain, thunder and stronger winds. Storms accompanied by powerful winds and hail may also develop in certain areas.

After several days of sunny weather and occasional instability, North Macedonia is expected to be hit by an extreme heatwave, particularly over the weekend.

Today, the country experienced clear and warm weather, with light to moderate cloud cover.

Tomorrow, sunny and warm weather is forecast, while cloud cover will be light to moderate and localized. During the afternoon, cloud cover is expected to increase in mountainous areas, with the possibility of brief showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will blow from the northwest at light to moderate speeds. In Skopje, sunny and warm weather will prevail, accompanied by light to moderate cloud cover.

Thursday will mark the beginning of a period of predominantly stable and very warm weather. Minimum temperatures will range from 12°C to 21°C, while maximum temperatures will reach between 33°C and 39°C. Winds will be light to moderate and will blow from the southeast.

Friday, August 21, is expected to bring a further rise in temperatures. Minimum temperatures will range from 13°C to 22°C, while daytime maximums will reach between 34°C and 40°C.

On Saturday, August 22, minimum temperatures will range from 14°C to 23°C, while maximum temperatures will rise further, reaching between 35°C and 41°C.

Instead, unstable conditions are expected, accompanied by strong winds, heavy rainfall and storms. Over the weekend, daytime temperatures could exceed 40 degrees in some regions of the country.

The PHI explains that when the ambient air temperature approaches or exceeds normal body temperature, which is around 36.7 degrees Celsius, the body has greater difficulty cooling itself. According to the institute, this difficulty increases even further when relative humidity is high, because sweat evaporates more slowly and, as a result, the body is unable to lower its temperature easily.

If the body overheats or is unable to maintain its temperature balance, weakness, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, dry skin and abdominal pain may occur. The PHI stresses that as so-called “sunstroke” worsens, other signs may also appear, such as the cessation of sweating, very hot skin, confusion (dizziness), rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and even death.

According to the institute, the most at-risk groups are people over the age of 60, pregnant women, children, socially vulnerable people and workers who work outdoors.

Also at greater risk are people with chronic illnesses, including those with cardiovascular disease, lung and kidney disease, diabetes, mental illness, obesity, as well as people taking therapies that increase urination, such as diuretics and some medicines for epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, etc., the PHI said.
