Well-known meteorologist Lajda Porja forecast the atmospheric conditions for the coming days. According to her, the beginning of the week will be characterized by high temperatures, while by the weekend the country will be affected by rainfall.

Although mornings will bring a slight drop in temperatures, the weather will continue to show summer characteristics. Today, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 35°C in Berat County, while across most of the western lowlands, temperatures will range from 33 to 34°C.

The highest temperatures of the week are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. In Berat and Elbasan, the thermometer could reach 36°C, while values of 34 to 35°C are expected in the lowland cities. Temperatures along the coast will be more moderate, at 32-33°C.

According to Porja, rainfall will occur mainly in the eastern and southeastern areas on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Heavy showers will be more prevalent in Korçë County and Gjirokastër, while isolated episodes of rain during the afternoons may also occur in Pogradec, Peshkopi, Kukës and Bulqizë.

“Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will bring heavy showers across the entire eastern area, particularly in the southeast, with Korçë County expected to see heavy rainfall. Gjirokastër will also be affected more noticeably, while we expect the northeastern areas, Pogradec, as well as Peshkopi, Kukës and Bulqizë, to experience isolated heavy showers during the afternoons,” Porja said.

In the rest of the country, conditions will remain generally stable. Mornings will be sunny, while afternoons will be accompanied by cloud cover, without significant rainfall.

The most noticeable change is expected over the weekend, when temperatures will fall by 3-4 degrees. During this period, brief heavy showers are forecast across almost the entire territory, along with stronger winds and rough seas. Rainfall will begin in the north and northwest before spreading toward the south and southeast.

Porja explained that this drop in temperatures does not signal the lasting arrival of autumn, as warmer weather is expected to return.

“It is a temporary situation because although the beginning of the week remains at these levels, we expect temperatures of 32-33° to return for almost the entire month of September. September is forecast to record higher temperatures. So it is not that we are officially entering autumn this weekend and will then face cool days; rather, we will again have temperatures that will remain above 32 degrees at least until the end of the month,” the meteorologist said.

In Kosovo and North Macedonia, high temperatures will continue through Friday. In Kosovo, they are expected to reach 33-35°C, while in North Macedonia they will also remain at high levels.

Heavy showers in these two countries are expected to begin on Thursday and Friday, while over the weekend rainfall will affect most of the territory of Kosovo and North Macedonia, mainly during the afternoon hours. Strong winds, mini-storms and hail cannot be ruled out in isolated areas of the Balkans, while atmospheric conditions are expected to gradually improve during the following week.

Referring to long-term and seasonal projections, Xhakollari emphasized that the month of August is expected to be characterized by intense heat, where the mercury could climb up to 40 degrees Celsius, especially in its first ten-day period.

“Our data shows that an August with high temperatures awaits us, which will reach the value of 40 degrees. At least in the initial 10-day period, this heatwave will be more prolonged,” she stated.

The expert explained that along the seacoast temperatures will reach up to 36 degrees, while in the southern riviera up to 37 degrees. Regarding the start of the week, she announced that today a maximum of 35-36 degrees is forecast, with mostly clear weather across all Albanian territory, light passing clouds and no risk of rain.

Referring to the situation in neighboring countries, Porja emphasized that Kosovo and North Macedonia currently have normal temperature values, with 29-30 degrees in Pristina and up to 32 degrees in Skopje. However, the heatwave will penetrate the region starting from Tuesday, with a one-day delay compared to Albania. “In Kosovo, temperatures are expected to climb to 34-35 degrees, while in Gjakova and Prizren up to 36 degrees. In Skopje, the peak is expected on Friday. Here too the weather will be mostly clear, but in the afternoons isolated showers may form in the border areas of Kosovo with Albania. Tuesday as well, Osmani said, will begin with long sunny intervals during the morning hours, but later, in the second part of the day, clouds and light rain are expected. After Wednesday, according to the meteorologist, temperatures will start rising again. Thursday and Friday are expected to bring highs above 36°C across the entire territory.

He added that morning minimum temperatures will also rise. In the cities of the mountainous areas, by midweek the minimums will climb to 14-15°C, while in the second half of the week they will be around 17°C. In Dibër County, the thermometer is expected to reach 32-33 degrees, in Kukës 34 degrees, while the southeast, namely Korçë County, will be slightly cooler.

The weekend and Monday will be characterized by dry weather, with no rainfall across the entire territory. Porja stressed that the heat will feel even heavier, especially on Sunday and Monday, due to the gradual increase in humidity, which makes the weather more stifling.

A slight easing of this heatwave is expected to occur on Tuesday. Only on that day is a drop in temperatures of at least 2 to 3 degrees forecast, while in some areas it could be as much as 4 degrees, bringing the thermometer down from 40 to around 37-38 degrees. According to her, the situation will continue to improve in the middle of next week, when on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, as well as for three to four days, the weather will be somewhat cooler compared with the current days.

However, she stressed that this does not mean the country will experience truly cool temperatures, since July is officially beginning, a traditionally hot month. According to the forecast, African air masses are expected to activate frequently, bringing many days with temperatures of 38-39 degrees, while from mid-July there may be days when the thermometer climbs even higher.

Porja recalled that a very hot summer had been forecast earlier, one that began as early as the end of May with high temperatures and the breaking of historical records. She mentioned that the historical May record has been broken in the United Kingdom, while unprecedented temperatures for the month of June have also been recorded in Portugal and Spain. Meanwhile, a considerable number of heat-related fatalities has also been reported in France and Spain.

In conclusion, she underlined that temperatures of 40 or 41 degrees have not usually been seen in Albanian territory this early in June, as these values are generally recorded in July or at the beginning of August.
