Immediately after speaking to the media about the $302 million loan agreement between Albania and the United States for military equipment, Socialist Party parliamentary group leader Taulant Balla was confronted by a group of protesters.

The incident occurred as Balla was leaving the Parliament grounds in a vehicle. The protesters, gathered near the Namazgah Mosque, approached the vehicle and threw eggs at it.

Published footage shows the moment Balla’s vehicle was struck with eggs by the protesters as he left the area. Watch the video for more.

In a response published on social media, in which he also shared footage from the protest, Balla claims that the people who brought the coffin onto the boulevard are supporters of the Democratic Party in Durrës, as well as of a faction within this political force.

In his statement, he turns attention back 28 years, saying that Sali Berisha had carried out such an act before as well, when he brought the coffin of the late Azem Hajdari near the Prime Minister’s Office.

According to Balla, mocking the shroud runs counter both to Albanian customs and to religious traditions, whether Islamic or Christian. He also adds that he would respond to Sali Berisha, but, according to him, Albanian and religious customs do not allow him to do so.

“The people who brought a coffin onto the boulevard turn out to be supporters of the Democratic Party of Durrës (also of a faction within it). Sali Berisha carried out this shameful act 28 years ago with the coffin of the late Azem Hajdari. Mocking the shroud, in the sense of ridiculing a symbol linked to death and burial, is not in line with Albanian customs, as well as religious ones, whether Islamic or Christian. Sali, I would give you a response, but Albanian and religious customs do not allow me to,” Balla writes.

Përmes një reagimi të publikuar në rrjetet sociale, ku ka shpërndarë edhe pamje nga protesta, Balla pretendon se personat që e çuan arkivolin në bulevard janë mbështetës të Partisë Demokratike në Durrës, si edhe të një fraksioni brenda kësaj force politike.

Në deklaratën e tij, ai kthen vëmendjen 28 vite pas, duke thënë se një akt të tillë Sali Berisha e kishte kryer edhe më parë, kur kishte sjellë pranë Kryeministrisë arkivolin e të ndjerit Azem Hajdari.

Sipas Ballës, përqeshja me qefinin bie ndesh si me zakonet shqiptare, ashtu edhe me traditat fetare, qofshin ato islame apo të krishtera. Ai shton gjithashtu se do t’i përgjigjej Sali Berishës, por, sipas tij, kjo nuk i lejohet nga zakonet shqiptare dhe ato fetare.

“Personat që sollën në bulevard një arkivol qenkan mbështetës të Partisë Demokratike Durrës (edhe të një fraksioni brenda saj). Sali Berisha e ka bërë këtë akt të turpshëm 28 vite më parë me arkivolin e të ndjerit Azem Hajdari. Tallja me qefinin, në kuptimin e përqeshjes së një simboli të lidhur me vdekjen dhe varrimin, nuk përputhet me zakonet shqiptare, si dhe ato fetare, qoftë islame, qoftë kristiane. Ty, Sali, do të ta jepja një përgjigje, por zakonet shqiptare dhe fetare nuk ma lejojnë”, shkruan Balla.

“I see that the protest’s influencers, those who boost their followers and likes from it, are praising this act by a protester who is wiping off the egg, or I don’t know what substance was thrown on a police officer’s face. Wow, very nice! What an act?! Fine, it should also be welcomed even though the one wiping it off is one of those who threw it, if it wasn’t he himself. And he should not have thrown it. Nevertheless, reflection and apology are welcome. Forgiveness is not judged.

But I have something else: HOW CAN YOU USE THE RED-AND-BLACK NATIONAL FLAG AS A TOWEL?!”, Balla writes.

“Po shoh që influencerat e protestës, ata që qo rrisin followers&likes prej saj, po e përshëndesin këtë akt të një protestuesi që vezën, apo nuk di çfarë është lënda e hedhur mbi fytyrën e një polici, po ia pastron. Uau shumë bukur! Çfarë akti?! Dakord duhet përshëndetur edhe pse ai që e fshin është njëri prej atyre që e e ka hedhur, nëse nuk është ai vet. Dhe s’duhet ta kishte hedhur. Megjithatë reflektimi dhe ndjesa janë të mirëpritura. Falja nuk gjykohet.

Commenting on the civic protest in Tirana, which today enters its 30th day, Balla said that it has now turned into a deflated balloon.

“The group meeting was focused on our parliamentary agenda and, at the same time, I was informed by the parliamentary group of the position we will take regarding several requests for a motion with debate.

As for a DP request, read out from the protest, I neither accept nor recognize Sali’s party as an interlocutor between us and the protest.

I have respect for all those who will take part in the protest over issues related to concerns about environmental standards in a vital investment for the country’s economy in Zvërnec, which will necessarily be carried out, because it represents a major opportunity. I have also said before in my positions that this protest has involved elements which, both when they inflated it and now that this balloon has deflated… have been tourist competition and hostile foreign interference. This balloon has now burst in front of the eyes of Albanians.

This is not only about a protest that began over an act we all condemn; the violence in Zvërnec was unacceptable. Today that issue has been left in oblivion, and the only ones talking about it now are us.

Today, the protest has been stolen from those who started it,” Balla said.

“Mbledhja e grupit ishte e përqendruar te agjenda jonë parlamentare dhe, njëkohësisht, jam vënë në dijeni nga grupi parlamentar për qëndrimin që do të mbajmë lidhur me disa kërkesa për mocion me debat.

Për sa i takon një kërkese të PD-së, të lexuar nga protesta, unë as nuk e pranoj dhe as nuk e njoh Partinë e Saliut si interlokutore mes nesh dhe protestës.

Kam respekt për të gjithë ata që do të marrin pjesë në protestë për çështje që kanë të bëjnë me shqetësime mbi normat mjedisore në një investim jetik për ekonominë e vendit në Zvërnec, i cili do të realizohet domosdoshmërisht, sepse përbën një mundësi të madhe. E kam thënë edhe më parë në qëndrimet e mia se brenda kësaj proteste janë përfshirë edhe elementë që si kur e frynë, ashtu edhe tani që kjo tullumbace u shfry… kanë qenë konkurrencë turistike dhe interferenca të huaja armiqësore. Kjo tullumbace tashmë ka plasur në sytë e shqiptarëve.

Këtu nuk bëhet fjalë vetëm për një protestë që nisi për një akt që e dënojmë të gjithë; dhuna në Zvërnec ishte e papranueshme. Sot ajo çështje është lënë në harresë dhe të vetmit që flasim tani për të jemi ne.

Sot protestën ua kanë vjedhur atyre që e nisën”, tha Balla.
